Product Description
Sir Benjamin Ward Richardson (1828-1896) was an eminent British physician, anaesthetist, physiologist, sanitarian, and a prolific writer on medical history. He brought into use, no less than fourteen anesthetics, of which methylene bichloride is the best known, and he invented the first double-valved mouthpiece for use in the administration of chloroform. He also made known the peculiar properties of amyl nitrite, a drug which was largely used in the treatment of angina pectoris, and he introduced the bromides of quinine, iron and strychnia, ozonized ether, styptic and iodized colloid, peroxide of hydrogen, and ethylate of soda, substances which were soon largely used by the medical profession. In 1854, he was awarded the Fothergillian gold medal by the Medical Society of London for an essay on the Diseases of the Fetus in Utero. In 1856, he gained the Astley Cooper triennial prize of 300 guineas for his essay on The Coagulation of the Blood. In 1893, he was knighted in recognition of his eminent services to humanitarian causes.

Product Description
“Men are often reluctant to discuss issues that are important to their general health and well-being. This one-of-a-kind guide provides helpful information, in an easy-to-read format, on major health concerns including diet and nutrition, exercise, sexuality, and emotional health. This guide should help men make better decisions about their health.”—Jeffrey P. Koplan, M.D., M.P.H., Director, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

Guidelines for staying healthy at any age

Overviews of the body’s systems and organs—heart and lungs, reproductive system, brain and nervous system, urinary system, bones and joints, and the immune system

Explanations of the major diseases and their treatments, including heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer, drug abuse, and depression

Sensitive discussions of sexuality and reproduction, including sexual dysfunction, prostate health, stds, birth control, and age-related changes to sex and sexuality

Diet and exercise guidelines

Dozens of tables, boxes, and charts on key topics

Quick-reference format for finding the answers you need

      Amazon.com Review
If you’re male and have a health question, this is the place to find an answer. This ambitious, 500-page book from the American Medical Association is a thorough guide for keeping a man’s body healthy, making sense of his system, and understanding specific health concerns. Part 1, “The Healthy Man,” gives a quick overview of diet, exercise, weight management, alcohol, drugs, tobacco, and safety in 40 pages, including information you think you should know but maybe don’t, like how to read a food label, manage medications, and check for home safety hazards. Part 2, “Staying Healthy,” goes into more detail about diet, exercise, and weight management, and introduces preventive healthcare (e.g., medical screening tests and self-examinations), emotional health, and avoiding risky behavior and violence. Part 3, “The Reproductive System,” covers male sexuality, including reproductive disorders, STDs, birth control, and treatments for erectile dysfunction. Part 4, “Common Health Concerns,” comprising more than half the book, covers common male medical conditions and how to prevent and/or treat them. The writing is straightforward and serious (no wittiness or jokes), like a consultation with a trusted physician. The book covers so many topics that its treatment of any one condition is far from comprehensive, but it’s an excellent reference and a starting place for learning about your health issues. –Joan Price

Product Description
Accessible and clinically relevant, A Clinician’s Guide to Statistics and Epidemiology in Mental Health describes statistical concepts in plain English with minimal mathematical content, making it perfect for the busy health professional. Using clear language in favour of complex terminology, limitations of statistical techniques are emphasized, as well as the importance of interpretation – as opposed to ‘number-crunching’ – in analysis. Uniquely for a text of this kind, there is extensive coverage of causation and the conceptual, philosophical and political factors involved, with forthright discussion of the pharmaceutical industry’s role in psychiatric research. By creating a greater understanding of the world of research, this book empowers health professionals to make their own judgments on which statistics to believe – and why.
